Everything about this game is fun. The freedom to move around and do largely what you want keeps things interesting and I continue to find new things I didnt even know were possible before. My one complaint, and the one thing that keeps this game from getting five stars, is the fact that I cannot figure out how to exit fullscreen mode.
played this game for hours on end when I was 10-12 years old... great remake of an awesome classic... would love to see some of the ther sid meiers stuff... railroad tycoon?
I swear Ive played every re-creation of the original as possible and I keep playing them. Cant stop, wont stop.
I liked the Civilization Games by Sid Meiers so I gave this a try. After about 2 hours of play I would have to say that this is just ok. Not great. Not worth the Money. I would say its worth $10.
First off this is one of my all time favorites from childhood and Im played/purchased virtually every version ever made and absolutely love the remake. the only complaint I had with it was the keymappings where for a keypad which of course most newer macs simply do not have... untill the latest update! yes even though they say you dont need to update its worth it just for the new keymappings. Thanks again for an awesome port of a sid Meyers classic!
After several emails to the "support" email noted in this app, Ive received no response. The game will not load for me on a brand new MBP. Hopefully Apple will refund my purchase as the publisher is completely non-responsive.
I loved this game years ago, Im so glad to be able to play it native on my current machine again.
The best part is the ship battles and the sword fights. I would recommend playing with an external keyboard and mouse, and as soon as you get the hang of it on easy mode, switch to a tougher mode. And you really feel like a pirate when you rack up a dislike rating with one of the powers that be, so much so that they send ships after you. All in all: Great game.
For an older game, I tried to keep my expectations lower. I have to say Im a bit disappointed and I feel the price on the game is a bit high. Remastering and backporting do not justify the cost for the title as the gameplay is rugged, at best; furthermore, the graphics and sound qualities are not very good either. As for plot and storyline - while there is a story line, there is no direction and no guidance. I understand the philosophy of open-ended games, but even with other titles that are considered open-ended, you are still given some "push" in a certain direction. With this title, you are thrown quickly into the game. You have a shoddy quest button that allows you to see what pirates and treasures are near, but other than that I have yet to find just what it is Im supposed to be accomplishing, or where Im supposed to be going. That being said, if you have a quick 20 minutes to kill, this is the game for you - you can manuver your ship, attack and raid other boats to increase your loot, crew and fleet. The game runs fine on my MBA (base). I do not suggest paying this much for the title, however, if you insist on trying the title - I suggest you find another source, as the asking price is just too much for what the game is (just not enough "bang for your buck").
It seemed like a nice game, but I was stranded with no way to reboard my ship, which clearly means the creators didnt test the game.
I enjoy this game - its a good light diversion when Im not up for the intensity of Civ V. But just a word of warning: Im noticing a lot of weird graphics glitches since I updated to Mountain Lion. Might be good to wait and see if theres an update.
As another post states, there are now video issues under Mountain Lion. The game ran fine under Lion. We need an update. While the game is somewhat dated, I enjoy it and give it four stars (under Lion)
Love the game but get irritated by a couple of glitches. Cant go to the Hall of Champions, screen flickers for a few seconds whenever a scene change occurs, and it doesnt remember my settings after quiting the game. It is still playable and fun.
Refuses to even get to the options screen - avoid if you have one on the new iMacs (mine is the 21" 3.1 core i7 with NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB).
Played it like crazy when i was 7-15 (am 15 now) and love it. this is a great game and has hours and hours of play value
I played it when i was ten on pc and was very fun. It is for little kids and you still probably shouldnt buy it.
I ve played this game on Xbox, iPhone, and iPad and each was a better experience than playing it on my laptop. The graphics were glitchy, the controls were unintuitive, and I cant believe I spent 20 bucks on this crap.
I’m a kid that plays this game, and I love it. The gameplay is awesome and the graphics never glitch out, except when you go into port, but that is a very minor issue. Each time I open the app it runs perfectly without any bugs. My uncle introduced this game to me about a year ago on his iPad, but I never got it. A year later when I was searching the App Store in my room who’d a though it would have shown up. I know what other people are saying about the price. Well, I have an Xbox 1 (not bragging) and I’ve spent 60 bucks on a game that I’ve played for 30 minutes before almost never playing again. For 1/3 the cost, in 3 weeks I’ve played this game for about 10 hours, so I got more than full value and I still play it regularly. So, what is this game about? You were 10 years old (I think) when an evil guy named Marquis de Montablen kidnaps for family and tries to do the same to you because you owe him a debt. You escape and get your own ship to find your family, get married (to lovely Governor’s daugters, of course) and defeat the best Pirates that sail the Caribbean. You can side with the Dutch, French, Spanish or English and sink the ships of their enemies to win promotions. Their are so many choices in this game, like if you approach an enemy town you can attack it, sneak into it or chicken out and leave. In the beginning you also pick what skill you would like to specialize in, so maybe you choose a fencing skill that makes swordfights easier. It seems like whatever you do you have options, and that’s what makes this game so great. In a nutshell, this game could be played from 10 mins to 3 hrs, anyplace (it doesn’t require wifi), and is suitable for anybody, no matter what their age or personality.
I love Pirates! I have played almost every version since C-64 days. I bought this version just to find that on new iMacs, as soon as you get to a town, the screen flickers and basically the game becomes impossible to play. I have been hoping for a patch that will fix this issue but nothing… it is a shame, it is a great game but as it is, most people won’t be able to play it on a Mac...
